Life Insurance Underwriting for Bladder Cancer

As you can probably guess, the company is going to ask you a lot of questions about your bladder cancer:

  • When were you diagnosed with bladder cancer?
  • What type of cancer did you have?
  • What stage was the cancer and did you have any lymph nodes?
  • What treatment did you receive for the cancer?
  • Have there been any recurrences?
  • Do you have a family history of cancer and do you smoke?
  •  Do you have any other health problems?

Be sure to answer these questions as accurately and with as much detail as possible. Insurance underwriters are going to closely analyze your application and will get worried if information seems to be missing.

Life Insurance Quotes with Bladder Cancer

Your life insurance rating with bladder cancer will depend on a few factors. First, how serious was your bladder cancer? If you only had a few low-risk tumors with very little malignant risk, bladder cancer may not hurt your rating at all. The more serious your cancer, the lower your insurance rating will be.

Allowing more time between your treatment and application also helps because it shows that there wasn’t a recurrence. Every carrier has their own kind of categories, but here are some of the most common:

  • Preferred Plus: Impossible for someone that had bladder cancer. There is just too much of a future health risk for insurance companies to give this high a rating.
  • Preferred: Also impossible for applicants that had bladder cancer. Insurance companies don’t usually give discounted rates after you’ve had cancer.
  • Standard: Possible if your cancer was detected early and you only had a few, low-risk tumors with very little malignant potential. It should have been at least two years since your treatment and you should be in great health otherwise to qualify for this rating.
  • Table Rating (substandard): Most likely the best possible rating.
  • Declines: Applicants that have stage 3 or higher bladder cancer and applicants that have lymph nodes will likely be declined. Also, applicants that apply within two years of a cancer treatment, especially for a malignant tumor, will also likely be denied. You could be denied as well if you have other health conditions.

Bladder Cancer Insurance Case Studies

While qualifying for life insurance after bladder cancer is difficult, a good application improves your chances. Don’t believe us? Here are stories of previous clients.

Case Study: Male, 64 y/o, diagnosed with low risk, stage 1 bladder cancer at 60. Recovered after treatment at 61, applied for coverage but was rejected.

He was in pretty good health so getting diagnosed with stage 1 bladder cancer at 60 was a bit of a shock. Fortunately, he recovered in full after treatment at 61. Right after, he applied for life insurance and was declined.

His problem was that he applied too soon after treatment for coverage. We recommended this applicant try again and we also referred him to an insurance company that regularly deals with applicants that had bladder cancer. This time, the applicant was actually able to receive a Standard rating.

Case Study #2: Female, 57 y/o, former smoker, diagnosed with Stage 1 bladder cancer at 53, recovered after treatment at 55, quit smoking

This applicant was not taking great care of herself and was a heavy smoker. After she was diagnosed with bladder cancer at 53, she decided to turn things around. This appeared to make a difference as after treatment she never had a recurrence. She applied but couldn’t qualify for a policy.

Because of the bladder cancer and smoking in the past, they thought she was too risky. We recommended she ask her doctor for a note vouching that she was living a healthier lifestyle. She received a Substandard Level 1 policy from Banner Life, the best rating after Standard.

Don’t give up on applying for life insurance just because you’ve had bladder cancer. It’s still very possible to get a policy at a good rating.
