Life insurance can be difficult. Life insurance can be challenging. Often times it is tough to know what is the right kind and time to buy. Despite these challenges, it’s important to constantly have life insurance reviews.
It’s hard to really know if you really bought enough and sometimes it’s hard to even know if you should have any at all.
The insurance industry has made it much more difficult to understand what kind of life insurance is right for you by creating several confusing names; guaranteed whole life, universal life, term life, index universal life.
Some of these policies may have some sort of cash value and some may have a return of premium rider attached to it. Some of them invest the cash value into the stock market or index-like investments while others pay a fixed rate of return much like you get on a fixed annuity or a CD at your local bank. To top it all off, some of the insurance policies combine all of these concepts together.
Confused yet? That’s Why You Review Your Insurance Policies
This is probably why a study found that over 40% of individuals do not review their life insurance policies annually. In my personal experience, that number has to be much higher. No matter if that number applies to you or not, a large portion of Americans may simply be paying too much for insurance that they don’t even need. Hence, the importance of sitting down and reviewing your life insurance to meek sure you understand fully how your policy works and if it really will protect your family the way that you think it will.
Depending on how old or how young you are, a certain type of policy is needed. If you’re raising a family, you need to change at some point in time. There may be a time where you don’t as much life insurance. Instead of protecting your family, you may be protecting an estate. Reviewing your life insurance is one way to make sure you have the right coverage that is appropriate for you and your family.
Most importantly by reviewing your life insurance, make sure you have the right amount and the right kind for what you need today; not what you purchased five, ten or fifteen years or so ago.
Are You Paying Too Much?
So often times I run into families that have been paying on life insurance policies for over a decade, and they have no idea why they still have it. They just continue to pay on it thinking it’s the right thing today. In actuality, they could reduce their life insurance premiums and even do so by getting more coverage. I’ve seen it done dozens of times.
When was the last time you reviewed your life insurance policy?
Is it time to dust off your insurance policies and give them a review?
